South African fashion designer, Gert-Johan Coetzee, specialises in red carpet gowns and wedding gowns and is a big name in the fashion industry. Coetzee has dressed many international and local celebrities for red-carpet events, including the likes of Kourtney Kardashian, Kristen Cavallari, Liezel van der Westhuizen, Bonang Matheba, Basetsana Khumalu, Sashi Naidoo, Tatum Keshwar, Louise Carver, Noeleen, Cindy Nell and many more.

ABOUT THE GERT-JOHAN COETZEE BURSARY PROGRAMMES – FIELDS COVERED & COVERAGE VALUE

Gert-Johan Coetzee, partnered with the North West School of Design, is inviting students to apply for 2 bursary awards for the 2024 academic year:

1) The Fashion Design Bursary
The bursary award, valued at R182 000, will provide cover for the following expenses: tuition fees for 3 years, a Bernette – Chicago 5 sewing machine, sponsorship from Bernina SA, and an Asprire A315-51 I5 laptop to the value of R10 000. The bursary does NOT cover accommodation, transport and meals.

2) The Fashion Communication Bursary
The bursary award, valued at over R170 000, will provide cover for the following expenses: tuition fees for 3 years and an Asprire A315-51 I5 laptop to the value of R10 000. The bursary does NOT cover accommodation, transport and meals. The bursary does NOT cover accommodation, transport and meals.

MORE ABOUT THE GERT-JOHAN COETZEE BURSARY PROGRAMMES

The aim of the bursary is to grow the South African fashion industry and to allow students who wish to make a name for themselves within the fashion industry. The bursary theme is “Style Tribes: Subcultures”.
Students will undertake 3 years of study at the North West School of Design, in Klerksdorp.

Bursary recipients will be required to complete at least 2 internship programmes each year at the Gert Johan Coetzee studios, during holidays.

Both the Fashion Design and Fashion Communication qualifications, allow students to gain a vast array of knowledge in fashion illustration, fashion retail, apparel construction, pattern drafting and manipulation, and computer-aided design (CAD). ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GERT-JOHAN COETZEE BURSARIES

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • You must have completed Matric or be currently in Matric
  • You must be able to commence studies in January 2024 at the North West School of Design
  • You must be willing to stay in Klerksdorp for 3 years while studying at the North West School of Design
  • You must have a good attitude with dedication, passion and drive
  • You must have a natural fashion instinct
  • You must be willing and able to work hard

Students must also submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with the online application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

Fashion Design Bursary:

  • ID document or both sides of ID card (certified copy)
  • Matric latest results, if currently in Matric (certified copy)
  • Matric certificate, if completed Matric (certified copy)
  • 2 Fashion Designs based on any style tribe including fashion sketches (A4 size, full colour, maximum 5 MB each)
  • Mood Board with a collage showing which subcultures and aesthetics inspired your designs (maximum 5 MB)

Fashion Communication Bursary:

  • ID document or both sides of ID card (certified copy)
  • Matric latest results, if currently in Matric (certified copy)
  • Matric certificate, if completed Matric (certified copy)
  • Fashion Essay stating: why you should receive the bursary and how you will impact the SA Fashion industry if you are selected (maximum 200 words)
  • Mood Board with a collage showing which subcultures and aesthetics inspired your designs (maximum 5 MB)

SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE GERT-JOHAN COETZEE BURSARY PROGRAMME

The selection process will include the following steps:
1) Semi-finalists will be selected by Gert-Johan Coetzee, and will then be contacted via telephone by the Charles Oosthuizen from the NWSD, by no later than 19 October 2021.
2) Semi-finalists will be required to complete a first assignment and submit it by no later than 27 October 2021 (this will include answering questions by Gert-Johan Coetzee in a video).
3) Semi-finalists will then be handed a second assignment, to be completed by no later than 2 November 2021.
4) 10 finalists will be selected to compete for the bursary winners of the competition.
5) Finalists for the 2 bursaries will then be contacted telephonically, after 6 November 2021.
6) Studies will commence at North West School of Design in January 2024.
