About BHP Billiton Bursaries

Qualifying BHP Billiton bursary students are required to sign an employment contract with the company for a period equal to the bursary term. Bhp Billiton now also offers you the BECSA Full Bursary Scheme. There are many bursary programs available but by incorporating the BECSA Bursary scheme into their system Bhp Billiton has taken a leap into the future. Their bursaries include the following:
- Full University study fees
- Full registration fees
- Full examination fees
- University accommodation fees
- University meal fees
- Required Books and pocket money
- Computer allowance for purchase of a computer only available in 2nd year
Study Fields
They offer study in the following fields:
- Mining Engineering
- Extractive Metallurgy
- Electrical Engineering (Light & Heavy)
- Mine Surveying
- Geology
- Mechanical Engineering
- Chemical Engineering (Mineral Process)
Mining Engineering students will also have to gain a Mine Manager’s Certificate.
Both Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Students will be required to study further to obtain their National Certificate of Competency (Government Issued).

To apply for one of Bhp Billiton’s great bursaries you need to have the following requirements:
- Matric Certificate
- Mathematics with a ‘C’ symbol
- Science with a ‘C’ symbol
- A Valid South Africa ID document
- Must be a citizen of South Africa

Ensure that you have added certified copies of all required documents along with your application. It is always a good idea to think ahead and include an ID photo of yourself as well as a short letter telling the Bhp Billiton why you feel you deserve the bursary and a bit of background information on yourself. This is however not compulsory but might add to you qualifying. Preferably you should send it via registered mail to ensure delivery.
Bhp Billiton Bursary Closing Date
These bursaries close the end of May each year and selected candidates will be notified during July and August of the same year. You will need to partake in a panel interview, psychometric testing and a medical examination. You must be in possession or be able to obtain a medical fitness certificate. Interviews will take place during October and November of the same year and also January of the following year where after candidate will be selected.
