Rhodes University was first established in 1904 and today is known as a leading South African University in academic excellence. Located in Grahamstown, Makhanda, Rhodes is a small university with over 8200 students.
The university is proud to have maintained a high distinction and undergraduate/ graduate pass rate as well as the top ‘research output per academic staff member’.
Rhodes is also proud of receiving the largest bequest from a single donor, Mr Elias Bertrand Levistein and Ada Levenstein- as such, the Ada and Bertie Levenstein Bursary Programme were established. Bertie and Ada Levinstein were very passionate about education and learning and throughout their lives, they were benefactors to many individuals in need.
The aim of the bursary programme is to give individuals who do not have the financial means the chance to embark on their tertiary studies at Rhodes University.
The university is grateful for the donation of this programme as it ensures that candidate’s from poor, rural, and working-class backgrounds may have the opportunity to benefit from educational experiences and qualifications.
The Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University, Dr Mabizla, has made it his personal mission to ensure that academically talented individuals who face financial need will not be turned away from the university’s doors and may have the opportunity to study with the aid of the Ada and Levenstein programme.
