The Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA) is just 1 of South Africa’s 21 Sector Education Training Authorities (SETAs). The HWSETA is responsible for training, education, and skills development requirements for veterinary, health, and social development sectors of the country.

The HWSETA aims to up-skill health and social development workers, in order that they may provide world-class quality services. Their core values include: Transparency; Transformation; Integrity and Service Excellence.

ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME

The HWSETA Postgraduate Bursary will give preference to research in the following areas (Postgraduate Diploma/ Honours/ B-Tech/ M-Tech/ Masters/ D-Tech/ Doctoral/ Post-Doctoral):

  • Veterinary Sciences, Marine Aquaculture, Marine Biology
  • Health Sciences: Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Dentistry, Speech Language Therapy, Optometry, Radiography, Audiology
  • Nursing Sciences: Nursing Education, Primary Health Care, Maternal and Child Health, Community Health Nursing, Health Professions Education, Mental Health Nursing, Rural Health
  • Mental Health: Forensic Mental Health, Public Mental Health and Community Psychiatry, Child-Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry
  • Psychology: Counseling, Clinical, Forensic, Educational, Community
  • Public Health: Health Systems (Policy, Planning & Management), Health Economics, Clinical Epidemiology, Medical Informatics, eHealth, Telemedicine, Biostatistics, Bioethics and Health Law (Medical Law)
  • Environmental Health, Chemistry, Biology, Occupational Health and Safety
  • Medical Sociology, Demography, Environmental Sociology, Population Studies
  • Social Work: Clinical Social Work, Social Health Care, Occupational Social Work and Social Work (in Forensic Practice), Child Protection Law and Play Therapy
  • Social Welfare: Social Services and Development, Child and Youth Care, Poverty and Inequality, Disability Care – Rehabilitation and Management

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • South African citizen
  • Employed part-time or unemployed
  • Studying towards a Postgraduate qualification (Masters/ Honours/ Doctoral/ Post-Doctoral) – preferably a research proposal within one of the aforementioned areas
  • Studying at a recognised university or aother accredited higher education and training institution in South Africa
  • Learners with disabilities are welcome to apply

Selection criteria will be based on the following factors:

  • Scope of study and relevance to the sector
  • Academic Merit
  • Potential innovation and impact in the sector
  • Skills Priority area

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):

  • South African ID document (certified copy)
  • Proof of tertiary registration (stamped by the university)
  • Draft research proposal
  • Itemized and detailed budget to complete your research project
  • Motivational letter (1 page)
